Rodney Ronquillo

A versatile Filipino-Canadian singer, musician, composer, producer, and cultural innovator, Rodney Ronquillo has performed on world-class stages including the MGM Grand Garden Arena and Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, as well as the Cleveland Public Auditorium, each time performing before audiences of more than 10,000 people.

Born in 1974 — the very same year the band Hotdog was formed and the Manila Sound movement was born — Rodney’s musical journey has always felt destined to intersect with that of Mon Torralba, Hotdog’s original member and tonight’s honoree. As one of the few Canadian-born Filipinos to pursue music at a professional level, Rodney has carried this cultural legacy forward with pride.

Rodney’s career is decorated with awards and championships, including the Shaklee Idol Conference Competition in Cleveland, Ohio. There, he and Chyrell Ronquillo proudly represented Canada as the only non-American act, ultimately emerging as champions before a global audience of more than 10,000 people. Adding to this legacy, Rodney and Chyrell also made history as the first Canadians in Shaklee’s 56+ year history to open the company’s global conference by performing the U.S. National Anthem before an audience of 5,500 attendees.

As a composer and producer, Rodney has written and arranged over 200 original compositions, with several of his works featured in commercials, television programs, and campaigns worldwide. His ability to craft music across genres has made him not only a performer but also a creator whose work reaches far beyond the stage.

Rodney’s portfolio spans across film, television, and festivals. He co-wrote and co-produced “Fun Philippines on Fire” with Mon Torralba, the official theme song of the Fun Philippines Festival, which has electrified thousands of festival-goers since 2023. His original song “Rise” was featured on the U.S. reality TV show Whatever It Takes by New York Times bestselling author Grant Cardone, bringing his work to an international audience. He has also composed music for films such as Return to Country (2023) and Postcard (2024), and produced music for Kailan Tama ang Mali? (2019) featuring DK Tijam and Keeana Cerezo, as well as Dream (2018) featuring Liza Silagan. His music has also been heard in projects like Haunted Hotels of Hollywood, Mr. Nightmare, Creepy Pastas, and My OPM (2021).

His earlier career includes work on the sound team for Keanu Reeves’ 1990s sci-fi thriller Johnny Mnemonic, giving him firsthand experience in major international film production. As a vocalist, Rodney has sung backing vocals for some of the most iconic performers in the Philippines and beyond, including Martin Nievera, Pops Fernandez, David Pomeranz, and Morissette Amon.

Beyond his work as a performer and producer, Rodney is also the Founder of The Vocal Groove Collective, a high-energy performance group that blends live vocals, dance, and EDM-inspired arrangements. Created as a bold answer to helping revitalize Filipino festivals in Canada, the group has added a modern, party-style energy to community celebrations, drawing younger audiences while preserving Filipino cultural pride. Through VGC, Rodney has not only saved festivals from declining interest but has also redefined what a Filipino-Canadian cultural performance can look and feel like.

Known for his dynamic artistry, prolific creativity, attention to musical detail, an ear for perfect pitch, and commanding stage presence, Rodney has earned respect both as a performer and as a behind-the-scenes creator. He continues to embody the dual role of artist and cultural builder, equally at home on stage before thousands or in the studio crafting music for film, commercials, television, and festivals.

Tonight, Rodney Ronquillo brings his versatility, vision, and passion to Music & Memories: A Platinum Legacy — not only as a performer but as a proud Filipino-Canadian artist carrying forward the spirit of OPM into new generations and new horizons.
